What Are the DataForSEO APIs?
A commercial API for SERP, keyword and backlink data, used when you need search data as a feed rather than as a dashboard.
Definition
DataForSEO is a commercial provider of search data through APIs. It supplies SERP results, keyword metrics such as volume and difficulty, ranked keyword sets for domains and URLs, backlink data and AI search data. Pricing is per request rather than per seat.
What it is used for
- Collecting SERP snapshots at a chosen location and language
- Pulling the keywords a specific URL already ranks for
- Retrieving search volume, cost per click and difficulty at scale
- Gathering AI search and citation data for answer engine analysis
Working with it without wasting spend
Because billing is per request, the engineering matters. Batch keywords into the largest request the endpoint allows, since there is usually a flat fee per request plus a per item fee. Cache responses on disk and check the cache before refetching. Estimate cost before a run rather than after.
Reading the data honestly
Search volume from any provider is a modelled estimate, not a measurement, and different providers disagree because their models differ. Data is also market specific: results for one location and language say nothing about another. Treat the figures as relative signals for prioritisation rather than as counts.
Search volume from any third party is a modelled estimate, not a measured count. It is useful for ranking priorities against each other and misleading when read as traffic.
