What Is AI Search Visibility?
Whether your content is retrieved and cited inside AI generated answers, which is a different question from whether it ranks.
Definition
AI search visibility is the degree to which a site's content is surfaced and attributed inside AI generated answers, including Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini. It is measured by citation and mention rather than by position in a list of ten links.
Why ranking and citation are not the same
A ranked result competes for a click. A citation competes for inclusion in an answer that may never produce a click at all. The unit of selection is usually a passage rather than a page, so a document can be cited for one specific paragraph while the rest is ignored.
What Google says about it
Google's guidance is that the existing fundamentals apply and there are no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Its optimization guide for generative features emphasises unique and useful content, technical accessibility of that content, and clear page structure. Search Console reports now include generative AI performance data.
What is worth measuring
- Which prompts in your topic produce answers that cite you and which do not
- Which competitor domains are cited for the prompts where you are absent
- Whether the cited passage is the one you would have chosen
- Referral sessions arriving from assistant domains
- Whether your content is reachable without JavaScript execution
